One Star Mondays: Just when you thought it was safe …

Just because there hasn’t been a One Star Mondays post in a while, that doesn’t mean I have run out of bad music to share. We have only just begun (hey, that may be a song to use in the future) to scratch the surface of the bad music that has accumulated over the centuries.

This week’s installment won a Grammy in 2007 for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. I can only imagine that the award category was so specific that this song was the only one nominated. In any event, you can find the Grammy award winning Black Eyed Peas with their Grammy award winning song, “My Humps”, here at YouTube (embedding disabled to protect the innocent).

One star Mondays: Day late and a dollar short

Things have been so busy lately that I forgot to post an awful song yesterday. On each of our accelerators we are required to perform an annual calibration. This takes quite a bit of time and obviously cannot be performed during patient treatment hours. That means a lot of nights and weekends. Working on and off, it usually takes about one or two months to complete. So posting will probably be a light for the next month or so. In the meantime, to salve your disappointment, here is Debbie Boone, live from the Grammys in 1977.

One Star Mondays: Down Under

This week’s installment of one-star Mondays comes from Motown recording artist Charlene. Charlene recorded many songs for Motown, including a duet with Stevie Wonder, but none had the success of her song that reached #3 on the US charts, I’ve Never Been to Me. Here is what is widely considered the definitive version of the song: Elrond’s heart wrenching performance from the opening of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

One star Mondays: Latin edition

One star Mondays jumps from the 70s to the 90s with Ecuadorean rap sensation Gerardo Mejía’s biggest (and only) hit. According to his Wikipedia page, Gerardo is now an A&R executive at Interscope Records who was responsible for bringing Enrique Iglesias to prominence. Indeed he has much to answer for.

One-Star Mondays: the beginning

One of my favorite blogs, Radley Balko’s The Agitator has a great feature called Five-Star Fridays where Radley shares some of his favorite music every Friday. However, just as light cannot exist without dark, and good cannot exist without evil, great music can only exist if there is truly awful music with which to compare it.

In that spirit, I’ve decided to introduce One-Star Mondays, a collection of the worst music ever made. It’s not enough to be bad; anyone can write a bad song. To make this category a song has to be both awful and catchy, so that it gets stuck in your head and plays over and over until you beg for the sweet release of death. Now that waterboarding is illegal, I offer this category to the US government as a next-generation interrogation technique.

There is only one song that is worthy of kicking this category off. A song that has been widely acclaimed as the worst song ever. Paul Anka’s ode to his own virility, (You’re) Having My Baby.
